What to see in Villena

Villena rises above the Castillo de la Atalaya, an Almohad fortress from the twelfth century expanded in the fifteenth by Don Juan Pacheco. The castle has a poligonal layout with torres at the corners and a four‑storey torre del homenaje. In later centuries it suffered sieges during the Germanías, the War of Succession (Sucesión) and the War of Independence (Independencia). It still bears artillery impacts and prisoner paintings in the bóvedas.
